Every year, lakhs of pilgrims trek through the Himalayas to the holy cave shrine of Baba Barfani, at an altitude of 3,888m, to witness the naturally forming ice lingam of Lord Shiva. The Yatra runs from late June to August via the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route, with a helicopter option available for those who want to skip the trek. Registration opens in April, requires a valid medical certificate and an RFID Yatra card, and is open to pilgrims aged 13 to 75.
